For the past two days, the whole internet and social media have been filled with one particular event from this year's Academy Awards event. Can you guess what that incident is? Who am I kidding? Of course, everybody knows that. Everywhere you go on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, you see news and memes of Will Smith and Chris Rock.
You can tell it will go down as one of the greatest nights in television history. The iconic Hollywood actor Will Smith lost his temper, walked on the stage, and smacked comedian Chris Rock in the face. Chris was representing the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature with some added comedic ingredients to the crowds.
But Chris went slightly over par as he mentioned Jada Pinkett Smith, Will's wife, and made a joke about her bald head. Will, who seemed to be laughing and enjoying at first, suddenly turned red, and you know the rest.
What happened at the Oscars?
The Academy "Oscars" Awards have lost their popularity in recent times. People have lost their interest in the awards shows, and the Oscars are no different. And for the past few years, Academy Awards is also criticized for being biased, Hollywood-focused, and long. So at first, you might think of the incident as one of their scripted plays, but the reality is Chris went off script and joked about Jade, which did not go down well with her spouse Will Smith.
Chris said, "Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it, all right? It's—that was a nice one! Okay. I'm out here—uh-oh. Richard."
Jada was clearly discomforted by Chris's line while Will Smith was gloriously laughing, but a frame later, we see Will walking on the stage to approach Chris and, without speaking a single word, in Chris's own words, smacked the shit out of Chris. Will then went to his seat and shouted, "Keep my wife's name out your mouth!" Half an hour later, Will Smith won the Oscar for the first time for Best Actor for playing Richard Williams in King Richard, making the event even more ironic.
Why did Jada Pinkett Smith shave her head?
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been married since 1997. Pinkett Smith said that she was losing her hair, maybe due to stress, on an episode of her talk program Red Table Talk in 2018. She was diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune illness, and opted to shave her head totally in July 2021.
What are the aftermaths of the incident?
The look on other actors' faces was hilarious to see right after the hit by Will Smith. A day after, Will issued a formal apology on Instagram and Facebook, following public outcry. He wrote, "I would like to apologize publicly, Chris. I was out of line, and I was wrong. I am embarrassed, and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."
In favor of Chris, there has been a logarithmic growth in the ticket sales for his upcoming comedy shows following the Oscar incident. He said that as a comedian, sometimes it's difficult to judge which punchline crossed the line, and he too was sorry to hurt Smith's feelings. Finally, it ended peacefully, and we got to witness the iconic moment in television history.
