Summer movies have made quite the comeback! Last year's Barbienheimer phenomenon helped cement it. Although last year's strike means that some productions have halted and the lack of presence is felt, you will soon be experiencing a theatrical movie experience.
Furiosa kicked off the summer movie season, and something hit theaters before Labor Day weekend! Before Furiosa, there was Challengers, and this summer, we acknowledge it's Glen Powell's season!
We've compiled some of the movie season of 2024's hits!
Mean Girls
We weren't expecting PBA odds that Mean Girls would come to the theaters early this year. The movie adapts the 2018 Broadway musical and features the same storyline. Angourie Rice plays Cady and joins the Plastics, ruled by Queen Bee Regina George (Renée Rapp). After Cady develops feelings for Rwegina's ex and her friends, she strategizes and executes a plan to sabotage Regina and topple her from the unspoken hierarchy of the high school. Tina Fey once again pens the screenplay for this adaptation of Mean Girls.
Furiosa
Before Mad Max: Fury Road was even made, George Miller prepared a screenplay tackling the iconic one-armed spitfire savior who helped Mad Max survive Fury Road and her complicated past. There has been word on the streets about how this prequel "underperformed," but Miller's storytelling and dedication to the craft are mindblowing. Anya Taylor-Joy rightfully delivers and steps into Charlize Theron's boots, while Christ Hemsworth puts the best performance of a lifetime alongside her. Start your engines - Furiosa is worth watching!
Challengers
The classic love triangle: two guys love a girl, and the girl loves tennis, and she plays tennis because it's a relationship. Challenger is a twisted athletic twist on the classic love triangle angle. It's a story about love, sports, passion - and rising to meet life's challenges. Zendaya stuns as Tashi Duncan, the muse and coach, while Mike Faist plays Art Donaldson, and Josh O'Connor plays Patrick Zweig.
Dune: Part II
Dune II is the awaited sequel to Paul Atreides' journey. Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and Stephen McKinley Henderson join him. His archenemy is played by Austin Butler, as Feyd Rautha, ruthless and powerful. Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub also join the cast. Positive reviews greeted the space epic.
Hit Man
The 2024 movie season isn't 2024 without Glen Powell! After the heels of Anybody But You, Powell stars and produces Hit Man, a Netflix original action comedy. It follows a professor who is also a fake hitman. His side gig turns dangerous after he meets and falls for a woman fleeing an abusive relationship. The story was inspired by the actual "hitman."
The Bikeriders
Challengers' Mike Faist returns to the silver screen in The Bikeirders, inspired by a book by photographer Danny Lyons. The drama follows the tensions inside a biker gang. Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy also star in this movie, which offers a closer and more intimate look at the dynamics behind biker gangs.
Wrapping Up
2024 is shaping up to be memorable movie-wise. Many stories are showcased in the movies, and a wide variety of them feature new talents. We hope to see more stories—and, of course, to see the art form elevate with every movie. Happy watching!
